HALCOMBE NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Tiio painfully sudden death of Mr Jamos I'atterson, the father of Mrs John Monison,, of Tokorangi, which occurred last Wednesday, created quite p. gloom in this district/ as the deceased ■ gentleman, although; %7 years of age, was in possession of robust health and greai energy, but succumbed after a
very, brief attack of,* piitumonia. • Great sympathy-is felt forvthe Morrison .family, who appear to'have had more than their share of misfortune lately, Mr Morrison being confined to his bed with pleurisy. We all hops to sea him, shortly, fully recovered. The funeral of Mr Patterson; took place on Friday, Mid was mimerously attended. Last Wednesday a! kitchen tea and garden party was heM at the residence of Mr James Quarrie, as a send off to his daughter, Miss Harriet Quarrie, who is to be married to Mr Matthews, of A wafuri, on the 9th prox. The bride elect is well and favourably known here and we all join sincerely in wishing the prospective couple 'every happiness and prosperity in the future. They were the recipients of many useful and valuable pres?nts. An accident occurred to Mr and Mrs C. Callingham, who with Miss D. Callingnam, were returning from the garden party, when one of the wheels of the gig got into a.deep ditch that was concealed by the high grass, resulting in a capsize. We are glad to relate that not much damage was done. Tho subscribers to the Wanganui "Chronicle" in Halcomba will be pleased to hear that arrangement has been .inado to exchange the books of the Library with those of Kimbolton. The privilege of having fhs free use of so many well bound, amusing and instructive books ought to be a great inducement to .subscribers, and is a liberal innovation that no^ other paoei- in the Dominion ha<v attempted. "Will subscribers in Halcombe please take the hint and immediately return any library books in their possession, as Mr Flemming will commence packing up the Halcombo portion.'
The popular Fred Foley will be hero on Tuesday night, next, and as ho is well known hero as a really genuine good showman, his. clever and varied entertainment shoiild attract a good house.
Thero \va-. a show of work "pt iho Toohnical School. Feilding, lost Thursday, where the l?.d;es of the Halcomb'e dressmaking class, who are taught under the capable* supervision of Miss Gilbertson, exhibited their delicate handiwork, which was very mucli admired. Our Halcombp cricket tram went to Sandon on Saturday to play their first Tnion ma,tch. Tho'Sandon men proved too' many for them. The next match will be t>layed 'here on Saturday next, versus Cheltenham. We wish our men better luck. v . . - Now that tho .County .Ridings all round us. have iliVown open ihe grazing of roads it is sincerely hoped that tho Halcombe Town Board will have the common sensn to follow their.good example, as it is a perfect sin to scs such lovely arars going to waste,, only to dry up and b? a eorious menace to fencing and buildings, through any accidental fu*3.
As I pen theso l'nes after a long spell of beautiful summer weather the imicii-needod nin has come at last, and will do a world of good.
