THE EXTRAORDINARY SUFFRAGETTES.
Tho London"'suffragettes .are still behaving after their kind,- but in their latest exploit they have gone one better. Mr Lloyd-Georga, that ardent democrat, was put up \o address a meeting of the Women's Liberal Federation on tho subject of woman's suffrage. The suffragettes refused him a hearing. Tho stewards carried ont dozens of women, struggling and fighting. Others, chained 'themselves to. pillarn and cha-rs. Finally. Mr LlpydGorgo was compel] j-d to stop. Sonietiinog twenty scrimmages were proceeding simultaneously. The women threw aside their cloaks and appeared in prison dress. Several of the'interrupters were very badly handled by the stewards.
It doesn't make very plea~a: t reading. And it puts women's suffrage in England a little -farther back among the remoter possibilities of politics. Mr Lloyd-George is a sympathiser, and explained that the Government could not introduce a woman's suffrage Bill bocauso a sincere and powerful minority of-the Cabinet was opposed to tho crantinp; .of the. suffrage, to women. But tho Government, he continued, "wculd allow a woman's suffrp.^? amendment to be introduced, r>ncl "would ano&p); responsibility for it if it avci <.\ carried. And this is the sort of explanation that tho foolish snffrawVt'1? would not allow Mr Lloyd George t'> make. On/* instinctively feels-rertm.'i sympathy 'For that sincere and powerful minority of the Cabinet.
