(United Press Association.—Copyright.) ROME, January 4. Mr Doresa describes the daring rescues amid the earthquake and flames by the Alfonwen's second mate named Mead, and an able seaman .named Smith.
The Alfonwen's captain (named Owens), while distributing food ashore entrusted Mr Dcwresa with a boat as the only means to retreat. Soon five soldiers attempted to seize the boat in order to escape to the mainland, Mr Doresa, producing a revolver, put them to flight. ~- Other rescuars. had similar experiences at the outset bi the panic. Signor Sah Tojiquido, the Director"General of Hygiene for Italy, thinks there, is little fear of any epidemics. Enormous quantities of disinfectants are being forwarded, including hundreds of tons of quicklime and chloride of lime.
4 violent earthquake shock was experienced at Stroinboli early to-duy lasting three* seconds, accompanied by tin eruption of the volcano and terrifying subterranean rumblings. Much damage resulted. A. severe shock was aho felt at Caltagirone, Sicily, where there are 30,----000 inhabitants, of whom eeveral were killed.
Shocks continue at Messina and Mclifco, and intense panic prevails. All the municipal doctors of Italy, and all the youn gdoctors in Rome have volunteered for' service in the earthquake zone. The noblest comnetituia is being shown everywhere. No assistance has yet reached the interior of Calabria and Sicily,, though 24 towns were destroyed in those parts. The relief has been almost concentrated at Messina and Reggio, where many of the injured have been accommodated in prisons. Tho famished people eat the raw flesh of donkeys and horses which the troops distribute.
