"N.Z. TIMES" POPULARITY CONTEST.
To the Editor. Sir, —I understand Wm. Webb, ex- ■ sculling champion has been nominated by his friends for the above. I believe also that Mr Woon, who until the last week held the position of sporting; editor of the "Times" has resigned, andl entered the field. One of the conditions governing the contest is as follows:— "No employee or agent of the ''New Zealand Times," nor anyone immediately related to an employee of the paper can be a candidate." Now to me Mr Wcon's nomination does not appear to be quite in keeping with the condition mentioned. Undoubtedly the public would have entered into the spirit of the contest with greater zest had it been devoted exclusively to bona ■fide outsider.?. However as the "Times" has apparently accepted Mr Woon s resignation and nomination conjointly T take it ho is out against all comers. Nevertheless the latter's presence will not deter Webb's friends from the object they have in view, viz., to endeavour to win the competition on his behalf, and send to England the Wanganui miller who is so deservedly popular throughout Now Zealand to day—to row Barry, the English champion on the Thames-am, etc^^^
(The "Times" announces*" that Mr Woon has withdrawn from the contest— Ed. "Chornide.")
