THE LIBERAL PARTY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
(By Telegraph.)
WELLINGTON, December 6 Riii +'Ee+" hnr V? siti°n of the' Land BUI, togotuer with the recent reverses sustained by the Government in the Jriou.se in connection with tho Local bodies Sinking Funds, and the striking out of the salary of Mr W. P. Reeves at financial adviser to- the Government at London, have made politics more interesting than they have been for many years past. The estrangement of the leasehold members of the Government, party, together with the growing feeling of independence generally, has placed the Government in a very awkward end unpleasant position. On Saturday the Government only avoided another del eat on the Hospitals Bill by talking out the question of agreeing to the amendments made by the Council. The Land Bill is still threatening: to give; a groat deal of trotible. The debate on the motion that the report of the Lands Committee lie on the table was again resumed this afternoon and once more talked out, leaseholders steadfastly keeping up the stonewall commenced last week. What the upshot will be it is difficult td r,ay. A Government caucus will be held to-morrow to consider tho general position of matters. The statement made by the Hon J. A. Millar this afternoon to the effect that the the land for settlement policy- cannot continue tri go on, has created a great deal of surprise and comment, escpeeially its the House to-night is dealing with the Bill to increase tho amount to be borrowed for lands for settlement.
