Education Board meets this evening

The Orchestral Society's final concert for the season will be given in the Opera House to-night. A meeting of the Aotea Maori Land Board will be held at Wanganui on Monday, 13th, at 10.30 a.m. Judge Fisher will preside. A London cable announces that an underground cable between London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, has been completed. The members of the Chamber of Commerce are reminded of the meeting this morning at the Borough Chambers at 10 o'clock. So far eighteen entries have been received for the Band Contest which is to be held here. More entries maycome to hand to-day. The collection made at Christchurch on Saturday in aid of the St. John Ambulance Association totalled £2,000 16s, but all returns are not in yet. The complete total is expected to exceed last year's amount by £236. To-morrow afternoon her Excellency Lady Plunket will distribute all certificates gained during the year by students who have attended courses of lectures on first aid to the injured, either at the Technical School or Girls' College. A hearty invitation is given to all citizens to attend. Lady Plunket will speak in furtherance of the Plunket Nurse movement in Wanganui. A Christchurch wire says that the second coach from Otira for Broken River on Monday was delayed for half an hour under exceptional circumstances. While the coach was at the top of Arthur's Pass (3000 feet above sea level), a passenger gave birth to a male infant. The other passengers did all they could for the mother, and she and her infant were conveyed to the Bealey Hotel. As the result of a conference yesterday with the Prime Minister and the Minister for Mines, at which representatives of the Miners' Federation were present. It was decided to recommend the men to resume work immediately, pending a personal investigation of their grievances to be made by the Minister of Mines immediately after Christmas.

A press wire says that a superannuation scheme has been arranged for the masters, officers and engineers in the employ of the Union Steamship Company. The directors have decided to subsidise the scheme to the extent of £20, 000, namely, £10,000 cash and £1000 annually for ten years. The trustees have been appointed as follows: Captains D. J. Watson and A. Wallis (re presenting deck officers). A. R. Haslop and H. S. Baldwin (representing engineers), and C. Houldsworth and T. H. Whitson (representing the Union Company). The age of retirement for the men who have been ten years or more in the Company's service is to be 63 years
