WAVERLEY BOWLING NOTES.
By Firm Shot
The few notes I am going to forward you periodically, Mr Editor, will, I trust, not meet with disfavour among bowlers in our district; my object is to endeavour to popularise the good old game of bowls rather than to comment on' individual players.
The first match of the season will be played to-day (Wednesday, Bth inst.) against Hawera Club, the _ home club journeying by the 9 a.m. train, and taking five rinks with them. The matter of rinks came as a shock to some of the players, and it is very evident the new committee are going t<> introduce the policy of every player who inscribes his name on the blackboard must get a game irrespective of qualifications. It now remains to be seen how the game will eventuate. There_ is always the glorious uncertainty. If it were allowable to wager amongst bowlers, I won! I feel inclined to wager the committoe will be looking with drawn swords for the brother offijeer who dares to even suggest " fWe rinks" again.
Tho new innovation of picking rinks on Wednesday and Saturday, I am afraid, is not going to be the success as the incoming committee anticipated. Notwithstanding a" player arriving on the green before the usual hour of closing the board, as in past years, the odd players must play singles or wait the, arrival of other players, whereas the proper and accustomed style of picking rinks woiild obviate the annoyance of a long wait.
Some of the committee have made themselves very scarce on the green so far, and it behoves these players to take a little more interest in the game and follow the good example of the president, who appears to revel in his duties as a host. -
I understand several new players are likely to be enrolled as members, and with this object in view they are practising assiduously nightly. A little advice I Avould like to give these players—always' return other members' bowls, in the state which they were taken from the pavillion. Heavy dews are falling now, and nothing is so annoying to a bowler as to find his bowls in a dirty state.
Mr O.Hawes has donated three guineas to the club to purchase a trophy for competition. Trophies require getting under way early in the season. Half the season will, be over with us shortly, and we don't wish repetitions of two seasons ago. / Last season three trophies were presented by office-bearers for competition. I was just wondering whether there Avill be the same number this season.
It is time the committee made a move in getting the club represented at the forthcoming Northern Bowling Association. Nominations will be closing lyOne thing is noticeable this season. There is not the vini amongst bowlers so far compared with previous yearsIt was the custom to see three and four rinks playing on Wednesdays and Saturdays, whereas at present two rinks and an odd one have been the full muster.
Harrison's ferns were the means of seeing some very fine games played on the green when, the donor was here. It would be interesting to know who are in possession of games, as Firm Shot purposes throwing out a challenge for next Saturday. In my next" notes I will endeavour to criticise some of the players.
