MR. W. H. BARNICOAT.
The news that Mr W. H. Barnicoat: passed away suddenly about four o'clock yesterday morning will cause widespread regret. The deceased gentleman was^ at his office as usual oh Saturday,, and apparently was in good health, but he was suddenly stricken by apoplexy. The late Mr Barnicoat, who was 57 years of age, was born in Nelson, being a son of the late Hon. Barnicoat, M.L.C. He was educated in Nelson", and won a New Zealand University Junior Scholarship. After his scholastic career he entered a law office, where he made rapid strides. About 30 years ago lie came to Wanganui, where he entered into partnership with the late Mr C. H. Borlase, the firm of Borlase and Barnicoat being one of the best-known in New Zealand. On Mr Borlase entering private practice Mr W. J. Treadwell joined Mr Barnicoat, the firm enjoying a large practice at the present time. The late Mr Barnicoat was a man of a retiring disposition, and took no part in local politics. For very many years he was borough solicitor, a position which would have prevented his participation in municipal affairs even if he had been so disposed. Pleasures were found in the realms of literature. He was a great student of law, and was regarded as one of the soundest lawyers in New Zealand, his opinions being much sought after. For many years he was president of the local Law Society, and was also Wanganui's representative on" the Wellington Law Council. He was a man of high moral principle, and his actions were always honourable and straightforward. A widow and two grown-up daughters (Mrs Dr Wall, of Wanganui and Mrs E. Riddiford, of Wellington) are left to mourn their loss, and to them and other sorrowing relatives we tender our sympathy.
