THE NEW TAXATION.

A Bill entitled The Stnmp Duties Amendment 13111 (to give effect^ to two of Sir Joseph "Ward's new taxation proposals) made its appearance to-day. The Bill provides that th© duty of 1£ per cent, imposed by Section 142 of the principal Act ; s increased to 2? per cent, in respect* of every race meeting held after tht> passing of the Act or in progress at tlie date of the passing thereof.

The duty of 10s per cent, imposed on issues of bank-notes by tho second schedules of the principal Act is increased to 15s_ per cent.;, this increase to take effect in respect of the quart t fending on the iast day of December. 1909.
