Apropos the Polar quarrel, the New York "Sun" has the following : "Jonah stepped ashore. 'I left my records in the whale,' he observed. Anybody who wants to see them can go after them. It was noticed that none questioned his exploit."
Owing to the failure of the magnetic brake to act, two motor cars proceeding south in Dunedin in close proximity, collided, both cars being badly damaged. A chauffeur, who was much cut by broken glass, was the only one to receive injury, though both cars were crowded with passengers.
The Government again sustained a shaking on Saturday night Hitherto the Government, has set its face against waiving the Crown Suits Act in order to enable the Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Company (Wellington) to proceed against the State Coal Department. The third annual cadet rifle meeting under the auspices of the Manawatu Rifle Association was held at Palmerston North on Friday. Wanganui won the Defence Cadets 200 yards and came second in the aggregate. Dannevirke won the five hundred yards, and was first in the aggregate, and first in the teams. The results of the legal examinations so far as local candidates are concerned, are now to hand. Out of 16 students who sat, four passed. Miss H. Vine passed in four subjects thus qualifying as a solicitor. She is the first lady to have done so in Wanganui, and, we believe, is the second in New Zealand to have achieved that distinction. Mr Hector Christie passed in one subject and has thus passed his final. Mr Allan F. Hogg passed in three subjects out of four in the final section, thus having only one more subject in order to complete. Mr Gilbert Horsley obtained a partial pass for the first section, getting through in three subjects. We tender our congratulations to the successful students.
It is reported that a most successful canvass has been made of this district for shares for the Patea Freezing Works. Practically the whole of the shares required have been applied for, and it is proposed to allot them if possible during the coming week. It is satisfactory to note that a large number of shares have been applied for outside of this district. A number of settlers have approached the directors re going in for a bacon curing works, and the matter will be considered when the directors meet. It is urged that Patea would be an ideal place handy to railway and port, and as there is already a freezing plant and manure plant for treating offal, farmers could start works, much more cheaply by increasing the capital of the Freezing Company. — Hawera "Star."
