THE UREWERA COUNTRY.

The Native Minister (the Hon " Jas. Carroll) has introduced an amendment of the Urewera District Native Reserve Act, so as to exclude the Urewera Native Reserve of 656,000 acres from the operations of the Native Land Act 1909. Orders for the alienation of this land made by the commissioners appointed under the original Act are to have the force of freehold orders under the Native Land Act, and may be registered under the Land Transfer Act. In certain cases, the land may be vested in a Maori Land Board for sale, and timber cutting rights may be obtained through the same medium.
