EMPIRE EXHIBITION
GREAT DAY AT WEMBLEY UNPRECEDENTED SCENES Whit Monday at Wembley was a memorable day. Over 300,000 people attended. Received June 10, 8.30 p.m. (Reuter). LONDON, June 9. There were unprecedented scenes at Wembley to-day. A quarter of a million visitors were registered early in the afternoon, whereafter crowds continued to arrive. The gates were opened to ticket-holders. Owing to congestion at the turnstiles, queues hundreds of yards long waited goodhumouredly. Restaurants were besieged. All avenues and pavilions were thronged. The ambulance station dealt with over a hundred minor cases. The Exhibition grounds were brilliantly illuminated at night time, when, •t the firing of a maroon signal, everyone joined in a great ‘‘Link of Empire Handshake/ ’ which completely encircled the lake. It included citizens from every corner of the Empire. A carnival procession was a remarkable sight. Received June 10. 8.30 p.m. (Sun). LONDON, June 9. Business done at the Australian and New Zealand restaurants is highly successful. The restaurants are always packed. There is strong demand for apples, honey and butter at the New Zealand Pavilion. There is satisfactory evidence that the Exhibition has begun to fulfil its objective. There are many inquiries from prospective emigrants to Australia and New Zealand. They have capital ranging from £5OO to £15,000. 321,232 VISITORS ON WHIT MONDAY Received June 10. 10.30 p.m. fßeuter). LONDON, June 10. It is officially stated that 321.232 people visited the Empire Exhibition on Whit Monday. PTOMAINE POISONING LONDON. June 9. The Daily Chronicle states that near- I y 60 men, women and children were taken seriously ill at the Empire Exhibition. They were treated at the Central Ambulance Station, where the medical officer diagnosed the trouble as ptomaine poisoning. Some of the patients said they had eaten veal and ham pies.
