N.Z. GOLF ASSOCIATION

At the monthly meeting of the council there were present: Messrs R. C. Kirk (chairman), W. E. A. Gill, J. B. Mac Ewan, W. M. Horton, A. D. S. Duncan, and Mr. G. C. Sutton (secretary). Applications for affiliation to the association were received from the Featherston Golf Club and the Helensville Golf Club, and both were elected members of the association. The secretary reported that he has also received enquiries from the Hawarden Golf Club and the Te Puke Golf Club asking for information with regard to joining the association. A letter was received from the Auckland Golf Club with reference to the programme for the open and amateur championship in September, and the programme is to be submitted to the council for its approval at an early date. The publishers of a publication to be known as the “ N.Z. Golf Annual,” asked for the right to call the publication “the official organ of the N.Z. Golf Council.” The council decided that whilst it is not in favour of the publication being the official organ of the association, it will give it recognition as a journal which should be of interest to golfers and will be prepared to help and encourage the publication. A letter was received from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew’s giving more fully their reasons for not bring able to confirm the decision of the appeal committee of this association last year in a case submitted by the, Christchurch Golf Club, pointing out that the, decision No. 82 upon which the appeal committee relied is not on all-fours with the Christchurch case. Decision 82 had reference to an unsigned card being returned, and it is interesting to note that the St. Andrew’s ruling regarding cards which arc not handed to an official, but placed in a box, is that such cards cannot be afterwards withdrawn from the box for signature. There was a discussion regarding the meagre and somewhat disjointed cable reports of the English open and amateur championships, which reached New Zealand, and it was considered by the council that as the former event is practically the world’s championship, an effort should bo made to ensure a good paper report of these events in future. It was resolved to write to England to see what method is adopted for securing the information for Dominion papers.
