CRICKET.

The return match between 11 of Thorndon and 11 of Te Aro, was played on Thursday, on the Parade G-ru'iud, Tc Aro. The day was' lino although very windy, and the clouds of dust at intervals were most disagreeable, and materially interfered with the playing. The Tc Aro's went in first, and obtained 70 runs, 16 hyo balls and 4 overthrows, making a total score of 89; for the first innings; Gloiit scored

'20, and was not out, ami the batting of Ramsay and Phillips wore both good. Buck's howling was very good, having levelled five wickets, and two were caught out from his howling.. The Thermion's then went in, and scored only 31 runs, which, with live byes, mdde a total of.'W. Clout's bowling, as usual, told with great direct. The b-iwling of Ranlsav was also good, aiid the wicket keeping .of' Valentine! really excellent. The fielding of the Te Aro's was good, particularly Harvey, ds long stop, who seldom allowed a ball to pdss hiiri. The Te Aro's in their second Innings, only scored 26 runs, and 7 byes, total, 33. Brewer's bowling was remarkably good, severi wickets being knocked down by his bowlings. Clout was run out, without obtaining a n'tii, anil Valentine's wicket went down with the first ball. The fielding of the Thorndon's in this innings had much improved, as will be seen by the.few lives that were obtained.

The Tliorudou's went iv for the second innings, having to dbtain 81. runs to win. The chances were against the Tliorndons, a. three of the players was very soon put out. The batting of Brewer, however, told well in their favour, he scoring 33" off his own bat; going in fourth and carrying out his bat with him. I.oth Boot, and Laurence Blake kept in well with Brewer, scoring 18 between them, Blake, however, wns soon run out, and thus terminited the match ; the Te Aro's winning by. 20 runs, their total being 122, and that of Thorndon, 102. The cricketers then adjourned to Mr. Valentine's " Coach and Horses," where ari excellent dinner was provided for the occasion ; und to which, we need hardly say, lifter the ex-' ertions that had been made ill the fi.ld, ample justice Was done. It was agreed that the conquering match should ho played on Thorndon Flit, the Thorndon players giving a week's notice to their opponents.
