TO THE ELECTORS OF THE WANGANUI AND RANGITIKEI DISTRICT.

Wanganui, January 30, 1865

Gentlemen, — Being one of those that signed the petition for the separation of Wanganui and Wellington, and it beiug now •my intention to withdraw my name from the same, I feel bound to state some reason for •my doing so, never having been a firm supporter of the separation movement, my object in signing the same was because I felt it might be the means of bringing about the •better administration of affairs in this district, more particularly after the behaviour of the Government towards this district at the last annual sitting of the Provincial Council. Always having entertained grave doubts as to the good policy of such a movement and after certain concessions made by the Wellington Government during tlie last siting of the Provincial Council I am convinced that any further agitation for the same would Hot he conducive to the welfare of this district, and instead of seeing the gradual and certain completion of public undertakings in Wanganui we should find that for a long time there would be a pertain dead lock on everything and works at present in progress would be brought to a standstill, As regards the Wanganui Bridge, which, until the last session was no nearer completion than it was when first talked of some years ago, should we persist in separation we shall have full as many years to look forward to again whereas now we have the satisfaction of knowing that immediate steps can be taken for the carrying on ofthe same, which of itself is a work of such paramount utility that I am sure many will pause ere they again commit themselves and continue to agitate the consummation of such an eviL Trusting that I -.have now given sufficient reason for withdrawing my name and as Wanganui and Rangitikei will now return six members in- : stead of four and there not being that im- . aginary determined opposition of the Wellington Government towards the welfare of ■.this district, I feel that it will be in tlie power of those six to attend to and forward tthe interests of this place. I am, gentlemen, Your's, &c, John W. Peatce.
