CENSUS OF THE MAORI POPULATION: SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT RELATIVE TO THE CHATHAM ISLANDS.
Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.
Native Department, Wellington, 9th August. 1911. Memorandum for the Hon. the Native Minister. I have the honour to forward herewith a supplementary report on the census of the Maori population. As stated in the May reporis, the figures shown therein do not include the Maori population of the Chatham Islands. These figures are now to hand, and show a total population of 215 persons. It will be noticed that an increase is visible as far as the Maori population is concerned, but 1 regret to report that the original inhabitants, the Morioris, are dying out. The total number of persons shows an increase of thirteen ac compared with the last census. The Enumerator reports, inter alia, as follows : " The Maoris have increased 16 per cent. The Morioris have decreased 46 - 6 per cent. The larger number of Morioris are half-castes with Maoris. The inci'ease of the Maoris is largely due to the better care of the children in the matters of housing, clothing, and infant-feeding:" Thus. W. Fishhk, Onder-Secrecary,
