Extracts from the Journals of the Souse of Representatives Thursday, the 4th Day of March, 1943 Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from A to L which, may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House: the Committee to consist of Mr. Barrell, Mr. P. Oarr, Mr. Cotterill, Mr. Harker, Mr. Massey, Mr. Richards, Mr. Roy, Mr. Schramm, Mr. W. Sullivan, and the Mover" —(Hon. Mr. Parry.) Friday, the sth Day of March, 1943 Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1941-42 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. No. 16/1942. —Petition of J. Dun lop and 161 Others Praying that action be taken to preserve the spawning-beds in the Bay of Plenty. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration, with a suggestion that the area referred to in the petition be specially investigated by the Marine Department. 12th March, 1943.

No. 19/1942. —Petition of A. A. Grant, of 13 Casel Street, Masterton Praying for compensation in lieu of leave allegedly due prior to his retirement from the Police Force. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 12th March, 1943.

No. 46/1942. —Petition of J. Guiniven and 233 Others, of Bayswater Praying that further consideration be given to the proposal for an oil-pipe line route and pumping-stations across the Bayswater peninsula, with a view to selecting a more suitable alternative route. I have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 12th March, 1943.

Praying for the suspension of the provisions of section 33 (2) of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 1927, for the duration of the war. I have the honour to report that the Committee considers the petitioners have a grievance which should be met, and that a suitable amendment of section 33, subsection (2), of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 1927, would enable a remedy to be applied; but as a question of Government policy may be involved, the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 12th March, 1943.

No. 21/1942. —Petition of Emma M. Janes and 3 Others, of Wellington Praying that previous temporary service of permanent employees in the Public Service be counted for superannuation purposes. I have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 4th June, 1943.

No. 19. —Petition of H. Kirkland, of Dunedin Praying for compensation for. alleged wrongful dismissal from his employment. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petitioner has not exhausted all his legal remedies; therefore, this Committee has no recommendation to make. 4th June, 1943.

No. 72/1941. —Petition of C. Leary, of Mataroa Praying for a rehearing of his case in the Magistrate's Court. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 18th June, 1943.

No. 50/1942.—Petition of L. C. Clements and Another, of Hamilton Praying for a rehearing of their case before the Armed Forces Appeal Board. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee a rehearing should be granted to the petitioners, and the Committee therefore refers the petition to the Government for most favourable consideration. 18th June, 1943.

No. 34. —Petition of Messrs. Brown and Dureau, Ltd., of Wellington Praying for a refund of Customs duty. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 18th June, 1943.

No. 35. —Petition of C. Humphris, of Sumner Praying for compensation for loss of his transport business. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 18th June, 1943.

No. 36.—Petition of A. H. Clark and Another, of Napier Praying for compensation for loss of their transport business. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 18th June, 1943.

PNo. 63/1942, —Petition of T. Clifford, of Hastings Praying for payment of insurance in respect of the loss by fire of a motor-truck. 1 have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 2nd July, 1943.

No. 18.—Petition of A. Bannister and Others, of Christchurch Praying for an additional retiring-allowance in consideration of their services with the State Dental Service. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the G-overnment for consideration. 29th July, 1943.

No. 41. —Petition of L. P. L. Doczi, of Palmerston North Praying for inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his internment as an alien. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make 29th July, 1943.

No. 46.—Petition of Nellie M. Kain, of Wellington Praying for the amendment of the Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act, 1928. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make 29th July, 1943.

No. 47.—Petition of J. H. Edwards, of Auckland Praying for compensation on account of alleged wrongful dismissal from the Post and Telegraph Department. 1 have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth August, 1943.

No. 40. —Petition of D. E. Bradney, of Auckland Praying for payment of a further sum of £2,500 to Messrs. J. H. Bradney and Sons, Ltd., in respect of the sale of the s.s. " Onewa," or, alternatively, that a Stipendiary Magistrate be appointed to inquire and report as to the value of the ship at date of sale in terms of the Shipping Requisitioning Emergency Regulations 1939. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 19th August, 1943.

No. 63.—Petition of L. M. Estoourt, of Hastings Praying for relief on account of alleged wrongful dismissal from the Public Service. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration; and in view of _ the petitioner's age and qualifications, efforts be made to obtain a position for him, provided petitioner gives an undertaking to carry out all lawful instructions issued to him by his superior officers. 19th August, 1943.

No. 69. —Petition of T. Hill, and Others, of North Devonport Praying for the restoration of a bus service at North Devonport. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 19th August, 1943.
