pletion of the contract for the restoration of the road-bridge over the Karamea River is behind the specified time by seven months and a half. In the Greymouth district the following works were supervised, reports made, &c. : The formation of the Great South Road was extended from Dry Creek 34 m. to Wataroa River, and from the river to 38 m. 40 eh. The survey was extended from 38 m. to 40 m. 27 eh. on the bank of the Waitanga River, and the construction of this section is in progress. The damage done to the road by a large washout on Mount Hercules has been made good. A length of one mile of the Lake Mapourika Road was constructed during the year. A track five miles and a half long, from Lake Haupiri to the hot springs, has been cleared and some formation done. Urgent repairs to the Taylorville Suspension Bridge were done, and also some renewals of timber in the piers. Further renewals are required. A track eight miles long has been formed up the Clark River, starting from its junction with the Grey River. Repairs to the Ahaura Bridge have been partly done; non-delivery of ironbark has hindered completion. The works on the bridges over Orwell Creek, Deadman's Creek, and Ross Creek, have been finished, and works on Potts Creek Bridge are in progress. Eepairs to the Nelson Creek Foot-bridge have been finished. Plans have been prepared for a wire foot-bridge over Waipuna Creek. Eepairs to a track from Hatter's Terrace to Lake Hochstetter are in progress. The formation of a portion of the Orwell Creek Eoad has been finished. About three-quarters of a mile of formation has been done on the Ahaura-Haupiri Eoad, and further work is in progress. A report was made on a proposed track up the Ten-mile Creek, North Beach, and also on work done for County Council on Doughboy Track. A report was made on proposed bridges over the Kokotahi and Waitaha Eivers, and on ferries over the Big Wanganui and Wataroa Eivers; and plans were prepared for the Kokotahi Bridge, and also for the Waitaha Bridge. A survey was made for a bridge-site over the Aorere Eiver at Ferntown, CoUingwood, and plans have been prepared. PUBLIC BUILDINGS. Auckland District. Government House. —The building was carefully maintained and looked after, and the grounds kept in order during the year. The Duke and Duchess of York stayed in the house during their visit to Auckland. Admiralty House has been leased by Mrs. Griffin. Tenders have been, called for a new house in wood by the Harbour Board. Departmental Buildings, Auckland. — Some general repairs and painting have been done during the year. Two additional rooms have been built to the caretaker's quarters. Departmental Buildings, Thames. —Some small repairs have been done and some are in progress A new flagstaff has been put up. Departmental Buildings, Tauranga. —Ordinary small repairs have been attended to. Courthouses. Supreme Court. — Some small repairs have been done to the roof, a flagstaff erected on the tower, and the drainage system has been revised and improved. Stipendiary Magistrate s Court, Auckland. —The Court-room has been enlarged, the upstairs Court has been ventilated and lighted with incandescent gas, another fire-prevention service has been fixed. Some new furniture has been provided, and a screen put in witnesses' room. Mangonui Courthouse. —Some repairs have been done, and the gutters and spouting put in repair. Hikurangi. —A small Courthouse has been built, and also a stable. Hakarau. —A new iron roof has been put on the Courthouse, and some repairs and painting done. Warkworth. —Some petty repairs have been done, by contract, to the Courthouse and policestation. Eussell. —Some alterations have been made to the Courthouse, and a room added for the Stipendiary Magistrate. Hamilton.' —Plans have been prepared for proposed alterations. Papakura. —Some repairs and painting have been done to the Courthouse. Te Awamutu. —A new Courthouse.has been built and fittings, &c, provided. Whakatane. —Two rooms have been added to the Courthouse. Wairoa. —A contract for additions to the Courthouse is in progress. Waihi. —A contract has been let for the erection of a Courthouse, and the work is in progress Ngaruawahia. —The work of altering the post-office into a Courthouse has been started. Cambridge. —The erection of outhouses and fencing has just been finished. Gaol, Central Block. —Good progress has been made with the ground-floor story. Police-stations. Mangonui. —Some repairs were done to the police-station, and two new tanks provided. Kaitaia. —A lock-up is being built. Whangaroa. —Some repairs and painting have been done to the police-station. Bussell. —Eepairs and painting have been done to the police-station. Warkworth. —The police-station has been put in a state of repair. Aratapu. —A new lock-up has been built. Pahi, —A stove has been fixed, and repairs and painting done to the police-station.
