No. 55/1937. —Petition of Morere Whatitiri and 38 Others, of Taranaki. No. 50. —Petition of Rangiteihinga and 23 Others, of Taranaki. Praying for relief in regard to Native leases in the Kaipakopako Block. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee these petitions should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. The Committee recommends that an Assessment Court be set up by legislation to investigate the new valuations between lessor and lessee ; that legislation be enacted empowering the Native Trustee to refuse sub-leases ; and that the original lessees be given a period in which to work out the value of their improvements with a view to the resumption of the land by the Natives. 13th September, 1939.

No. 94/1938. —Petition of Lou W. Parore and 5 Others, of Dargaville. Praying for the re-enactment of section 390 of the Native Land Act, 1909, and for the enactment of such other measures as will ensure the inalienation of Maori burial-grounds and villages. 1 am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 13th September, 1939.

No. 86/1938. —Petition of M. Matich, of Pouto. Praying for payment of the sum of £228 12s. 7d. for goods supplied to Native workers engaged in the Pouto Development Scheme. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 13th September, 1939.

No. 168/1937.—Petition of Te Huriwaka Pere, and 61 Others, of Matata. Praying that they be exempted from the payment of contributions towards the cost of maintenance and renewals, and also the payment of rates in connection with the Matata water-supply. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 13th September, 1939.
