REPORTS
Special Report I have the honour to report that the Committee to-day unanimously passed the following resolution, and directed that it be reported to the House :— " That the Native Affairs Committee record its appreciation of the past services of the Honourable James O'Brien. Mr. O'Brien has served on the Native Affairs Committee, except for a small space, since 1923, and for a third of that period as Chairman. " While extending its hearty congratulations to Mr. O'Brien on his elevation to the Cabinet, members regret the consequent loss of his services on the Committee, which, over the years, have been distinguished by his sympathetic understanding of the Maoris and his capable and courteous leadership." 9th March, 1943.
[Translation] Ripoata Motuhake E whai honore ana ahau kite ripoata, i tenei ra, i runga i te whakaaro kot.ahi, i paahitia e te Komiti tenei motini e whai ake nei a i whakahaua kia ripoatatia atu kite Whare :— " Kua tuhituhia e te Komiti Mo Nga Mea Maori tana whakanui mo nga mahi i mahia e te Honore James O'Brien. Ko Mr. O'Brien i noho hei mema mo te Komiti Mo Nga Mea Maori mai ano ite tau 1923, haunga ia tetahi wa poto nei, a mo te kotahi toru o te wa i noho ai ia hei mema ko ia te Tiamana. " He nui te koa o te Komiti mo Mr. O'Brien kua whakaturia nei kite turanga o roto i te Ropu o nga Minita o te Kawanatanga engari ra ahakoa tena ko nga mema e pouri ana mona me ana mahi ka wehe atu nei i te Komiti, ara ana mahi mo nga tau maha i marama pai te takoto i runga i tona whakaaro pai kite Iwi Maori a mo tona kaha kite whakahaere a kite arahi rangatira i nga take ka ngaro nei kite Komiti." 9 o Maehe, 1943.

I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 12th March, 1943.
