WHO WON THE WAR? Praise Fop British Armies.
LONDON, April 6. The question of who won the war is answered hy Colonel Lionel James,' formerly a war eoi'respondent and jourlialist, wlio- commanded King Edward's Horse in France and Jtaly from 1915 to 1918, in an article in the Evening Stnndard. Colonel James says — "'At tlie beginning of August, 1918. the Frcnch Army was ahnost completely exhausted as a fighting force; the Americans were a vigorous rahhle; and the British Army was the only force that was a real fighting instrument. "The late Marshal Foch , at the first meeting with the late Fielcl-Marshal Haig after the armistiee, said, 'My clear Marshal, your wonderful army has saved France — saved us all. "Without you we were beaten.' "A few days later, when the details were better known,- Foch, at the luncheon table at general headquarters, said, 'The battlcs of your British Army will live for all time as a classic 011 how great military operations should be conducted. Notliing was ever seen like it in the history of all wars.' "
