THIRTEEN BREACHES

Y2IDE GAPS IN RIYER BANKS. Condition Of Three Rivers. A tour of inspection carried. out yes:erday hy Mr P. Scullin, overseer to ihe Hawke's Bay Rivers Board, acjompanied by Mr G. Rochfort, [iroved :he extent of the damage to the stop lanks, which proved more serious than vas at first expected. There are as far as is known thirteen breaelies in the banks of the Tutaekuri, the Ngaru;oro and tho overflow ; tlie gaps varying in length from seven or eight yards to as much as two or three .'hains, but the true state of affairs :an only be ascertained with accuracy ivhen the fiood waters recede. Proceeding down the Ngaruroro. Mr Scullin found that there were three ireaches in tlie south bank between Fernhill' and Pakowhai, which were throwing the fiood waters through on to Raupare and Twyford. The first of these breaches, as far as could be iscertained was about two chains in Jxtent. In the north bank of the Ygaruroro, between Omahu and Pakowhai there is one breach of-two chains, the water through whicli is fiooding Waima and Korokipo. Between the Dleanee bridge- and the iverflow the south bank of tlie Tutaekuri was broken in three places, sending tlie water over 011 to Papakura. The oveflow ehaiuiel, to the openng of which there has been so much opposition during recent weeks, has proved itself, carrving a great volume if water that would ha\ e proved a menice to Taradale, Greenmeadows and Meanee if it had to be carried by the main chnnnel. Tlie banks of the overflow so far as they have been construet-] ed, and whicli wero five to six feet liigh, have had a big gruelling, and avo now broken by six gaps. Two of them are on the northern or Papakura bank of the overfloow, one being about two chains in extent. and the other one chaiii. In tlie soutli bank there are four breaks, the extent of wliicli appears to be three chains each, but tlie depth of water in that locality is so great tliat it was not possible to get any where near them. Mr Scullin was occupied to-day in qarryiug out an inspection of the Raupare aud Twyford areas.
