FIRE IN HASTINGS
SIX-llOOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. WATER A LONG WAY OFF. At 11.25 this morning tlie Hastings Fire Brigade received a call to an empty, six-roomed liouse at the corner of Wail road and Maraekakaho road. On the arrival of the brigade it was found that the place was iu tlie full grip of Ihe flames and as it was situated jitst on tlie borough boundary, difliculty was experienced in eecuting a water supplv This was eventually overcome by the firemen running out a 1400 foot lead from Oliphant road, By this time, however, tlie place was well doomed and there ivas no possibility of saving anything, it being total ly destroyed. Tlie liouse. which is a very old one, was in the hands of tlie pamters and it is stated that the hurniug off ')f tlie old paint with a blow lamp Ai'as +,,e oause of tlie fire. The house was insured for £500 in the South Bvitisli Office. YYliilst tlie briaade was attending this fire. the..- bell again sounded, but this was caus'ed through a slip in the ringing switch.
