HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL
WORK IN NOVEMBER. REPORT GF PRINCIPAL. The following is the Novemher reporfc of Mr YV. A. G. Penlington prmcipal of the Hastings High School: — "The roll numher averaged 343 thx-oughout the montli. The daily attendance averaged 318, or 92.7 per cent of the roll number. At tlio end of Noveinber there were 340 pupils on the j'oll (181 boys and 159 girKi. "The mc.Tith has been busy with the variqus November examinations, ex- . tending fro'm the 17th to 28th. One, and. soinetimes two, of the school classrooms were used for the purpose. Classes in woodwork, metalwork and cookei'y had to be suspencled during that timo as the instructers were require'd to act as supervisors. This fact, together with the loss of classrooms, made sonie difiiculty in maintaining the nsual programme of classes at the school. "On December 1, eommences the University entrance examination (matriculation) for which 37 pupils are candidates. Last year we had 29 candidates. "On Novemher 7 we were visited hy the Dannevirke High School cricket team, the xnatch resulting in a win for us on the first innings. "A junior team of our hoys paid a visit to Hereworth school. Unfortuntely, however, the match was interrupted by rain. "By a'ri-angement with the High School League a parents' day is heing held at the school on the afternoon of Thursday. It is hoped that parents of intcnding pxxpils as well as of those alreadv iix attendanee, will take this opportunity of visiting the scliool. "We are indehtedl to Mr W. Lynch for a gift of a dozen volumes of "The Scientific Amex-ican".
