Chess Championship.
MR GRIERSON THE WINNER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night. At the chess champion tourney Grieraon (Auckland) won the championship with 6i wins and 21 losses. Balk, Forsytho (Otago), Kelling (Wellington), and Mason (Palmerston North) tied for Booond plaoe, and divide £2l la equally between them, each having 6 wins and 3 losses. Barnes, of Wellington, is next, with 4 wins and 5 losses.
OLD fIAN’S DEATH
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. By Telegraph —Press Association. Dunedin, last night. The inquiry touching the death of Jas. Mcßride, a laboror, of Caversham, has been adjourned pending a post mortem. Deceased, who was 53 years of age, stated when found lying at the back of the stable that hie son-in law, Thos. Brookfield, bad knocked him about, and his daughter, Mrs Brookfield, had prodded him in the stomaoh with a crutch. This statement was afterwards repeated in Brookfield s presence, the latter remarking that he bad never touched deceased.
