A young man named Malcolm Jenkins, 19 years of age, was drowned at Ottarnahana, a tidal lagoon at Karamea, on Sunday. He was accompanied by E. R. Issell, junr., and Mass K. O'Connor, lie attempted to cross the lagoon on horseback, but ho got into deep water ami lost control of Ills horse. Issell then rode out to rescue Jenkins, but his horse, too, became unmanageable, and so he discarded it and then swam out to the drowning man, who was weighed down by a heavy coat, the pockets of which wore tilled with cartridges. Issell attempted to bring Jenkins ashore, but was unable to do so, and had great difficulty in getting free from the hold of the drowning man. In an exhausted condition he at last reached a snag, and was eventually assisted ashoro by others, who were called to the scene by tbe cries of the lady, Miss O’Oonuor, who was also in a dangerous position, and was assisted ashore. Tbe body of Jenkins was discovered later on, and was buried at Karamea.
