FARMERS’ UNION
By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, last night. At tho Provincial Conference of branchos of the Farmers’ Union to-day a motion that the Executive tako steps to have tho law altered to prevent unfair “ trotting ” by auctioneers wus carried ; also that auctioneers’ license fees should go to county councils. A motion expressing strong disapproval of tho departmental conditions for tho uao of country telephones was passed, and was recommended to branches. It was decided to mako subscription of members JOs por annual. Several minor suggestions wero loft or referred to tho committoes. A FIRE.
Last night at Fortrose a fire destroyed a four-stalied stable, forage room, loose boxes, a mare, and a quantity of harnoss belonging to Charles Humphries, hotelkeeper, also a stablo and harness belonging to John AndersoD, butebor. Tho Fortress Hotol was saved with difficulty. Anderson had no insurance. Humphries was covered for £SO in the Now Zoaland office. Millno, owner of tho hotel, has £3OO on tho house and stable.
