DRAINAGE.

SHONE AND SEPTIC TANK SYSTEMS.

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)

Sir, —Following up the figures I gave you in your last issue, which showed that by adopting Waimata water scheme in place of Mr Mestayer’s Waibirore scheme that Whataupoko, Haiti, and Gisborne, as well as the Freezing Works, can bo supplied with water at an annual cost to the ratepayers of the three districts of £731 10s less than it will cost Gisborne alone to get it irow Waibirero according to Mr Mestayer’s reduced figures. I now give you a summary showing the saving that can be effected by adopting the septic tank system in place of Mr Mestayer’s Shone system.—l am, etc., Douglas Lysnar. SHONE SYSTEM.

Mr Mestayer’s reduced estimate fordrainuge ... ... ... 30,000 Mr Mestayer’s estimate of £635 for annual cost of pumping, sewerage, at 4£ per cent. ... 14,000

Total capital cost 44,000 Totai annual cost at 41- per cent... 1980

SEPTIC TANK SYSTEM. Mr Mestayer’s estimate of reticulating Gisborne and gravitating sewerage to 4 points on 'l’aruheru and Waikanae streams... 12,500 Mr Wales, architoet of Dunedin, and agent for septic tank in the colony, estimate for 4 tanks to treat sewerage of 4000 people at £450 each tank ... 1800 Extras, say 1000 Annual cost of attention almost nil, say £45 per annum, capitalised at per cent.... ... 1000

Total capital cost 16,300 Total annual cost at 4£ per cent. £733 10s Note.—This shows that by Gisborne adopting the septic tank system of sewerage the annual cost to Gisborne will be £733 10s instead of £I9BO, which Gisborne would have to pay by adopting Mr Mestayer's scheme, or in other words it means an annual saving to Gisborne of £1247 10s. As Ido not profess to be an engineer, and having no expert figures to guide mo, I caunot say what sewerage for Kaiti and Whataupoko would cost on the septic tank system, but taking its cost upon the same rates as that for Gisborne, itjwould show that drainage could bo obtained on the septic tank system for the three districts at considerably less, cost than it will cost for Gisborne alone if Mr Mestayer’s pumping seworage scheme is adopted.—W.D.L.
