LANDS AND MORTGAGES RETURNS. Pc/ Press Association. WELLINGTON, last night. Pour well-known citizens wore proceeded against in the Magistrate’s Court to-day for failure to send in returns of their lands and mortgages in terms of the Land and Income Tax Act. The solicitors of tho Department declared that there was a large list of defaulters, in all parts of the colony, and these were the first of a series of cases to be brought, as the Department was being hampered in its work. Defendants were fined £2, with costs. RHODES; SCHOLARSHIPS. Tho Education Department has ar ranged a conference in connection with visit of Dr Parkin, representing tho Rhodes Scholarships Trust, who will arrive from London this week. It will be attended by the Chancellor of the Now Zoaland University, delegates from the four university colleges, four headmasters of secondary schools, two school inspectors, and the Secretary for Education.
