HAWKE’S BAY V. POVERTY BAY
(Special to the Times.) Napier, last night.
Every effort is being made by the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union to arrango for a steamer to take the Poverty Bay representatives homo on Sunday 18th, to enable tbeir match here to be played on Saturday 12th. It is probable that satisfactory arrangements will eventuate. TARANAKI DEFEAT AUCKLAND.
A ROUGH GAME. SPECTATORS EXPRESS THEIR DISAPPROVAL. Per Press Association. New Plymouth, last night. The Auckland v. Taranaki football match to-day proved a great attraction, the fact of Taranaki being unbeaten so far this year adding increased interest. Between three and four thousand spectators were present. The Taranaki forwards played a dashing game, Auckland chiefly relying on line play. In the first spell each side scored a penalty goal. The game was so fast that the visitors were fairly pumped out. In the second spell Taranaki scored a try, thus winning by six points to three. The Auckland backs were very safe, but the Taranaki forwards were irresistible. At times play was so rough by some of the visitors that they were hooted with loud expressions of disapproval. There was no doubt but that the best team won. Humphries played magnificently, and Allen and Glasgow were also conspicuous. But for overeagerness the Taranaki score should have boen greater.
