(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. Tho Wellington Racing Club gave £IB4O .css in stakes than the previous, year, owing to the Summer Meeting being reduced from three days to two. The fcotalisator receipts fell off £750, and fees increased by £195. The result of the year s work showed £9OO to the good. A suggestion was made that following the experience of the V.R.C. at Flemington, the course should be liberally top-dressed with sand, as it was too hard in summer and too wet in winter. Mr Henry B. Elder’s fine residence at Waikanae was totally destroyed by fire last night, together with the greatest part of the furniture. Tho houso was insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe for £9OOO, and the contents in the Bame office for £SOO. The Customs duties collected at Wellington last month amounted to £62,803, as against £53,397 last year.
