MR. JAS. ALLEN
ADDRESS TO CONSTITUENTS. Press Association. MILTON, last night. (Mr. Jas. Allen, member for Bruco, addressed a meeting of his constituents at Milton to-night. He referred feelingly to the Hon. Hall-Jones’ illness and tho lamented death of Mr, Seddon, and dealt at considerable length to the work of last session. Much of the legislation of the Government was lacking in effectiveness, notwithstanding that it had been in office for 17 years. He was pleased that the financial methods of the Government were to bo improved in the direction suggested by the critics on the Opposition side of the House. He would like to see the superannuation funds, police, railways, and school teachers put on a sound basis. Last year Mr. McNab said the Ministry would stand or fall with the Land Bill, and in view of what had happened in the recess one wondered in what form the Bill would be presented to Parliament next session. The total prospective rents from the proposed endowments totalled £184,000, yet Mr. Miller had said tho annual account for old age pensions, charitable aid, and education was £1,300,000. He thought the Ministry had shirked its responsibility by seeking the native land policy from a Royal Commission. After touching on a number of other subjects, and dealing with the matters which came before the Premiers’ Conference, Mr. Allen referred to some of the measures likely to come before the House this coining session. He was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and continued confidence.
