HOCKEY.

Tho competitionmatches wore commenced on tho Domain yesterday, play being on No. 1 ground. City ami Kia- Kiihu wore tho first two Loams to try conclusions, and a close and exciting game resulted in a victory for the latter by 1 goal to nil. For tlie winners Garrett played a tip-top defensive game, saving his side again and again, while of tho others Bright, Tabernacle, Grievo and J. Pollock worked hard. In tho City team J. Doyle, Armstrong, and Day wore tho most conspicuous. At the conclusion of the first match AVest End and To Ran met, and another excellent gamo resulted. AV-aif End eventually won by 3 goals to' 1. Olsen, AleLachhm, Roderick, and Hooper (who scored all the goals) wore the pick of tho AVest End team, while Gideon, Pine, Brown, and Hamilton showed good form -for the losers. A meeting of the Kia Kalin Club was held in tho pavilion before tho ginies started yesterday. Tlie iollowing office-bearers wero elected for the season: President, Air. It. Johnston ; vice-presidents, Messrs L. and IT. Alnude, J. AV. Bright, E. H. Pavitt, and J. Paltridgo; captain, L. 11. Garrett; vice-captain, B. J.
