Lord Brassey, in -a fetter to tho “Times,” expresses profound satisfaction at the Admiralty's new policy in regard to Australian defence. The loan of cruisers would be of " great service to Australia and at little cost to Britain who, being bound to continue building, always had .vessels to spare. Lord Brass©,v also suggests that cruisers of the Spartiate and Crescent type , would be desirable, and advises the carrying out of a nolicy of ungrudgingly fending more than two cruisers if there be good use for more; also, freely to lend officers and inistruetors fin tlie inaugural stage. The handing over of cruisers, continues Lord Bnissey, should he done w-itli all pomp and spectacular effect, of which Admiral Sir John Fisher is a past-master. Loaned vessels should form part of. a squadron of our most powerful cruisers.
[The Spartiate is a first-class cruiser of 11,000 tons, capable of steaming 20] knots. The Crescent i,s -also a first-class cruiser of 7700 tons, with a sliced of 19.7 knots. Both vessels are at present attached to the Home Flock]
