Allsop informed the Shipping reporter of the “Press” that a few days before his vessel called at the island a quantity of wreckage evidently from a sailing vessel which had met with disaster was washed ashore there. The wreckage consisted of a teak wood skylight about 7ft ijn length, withlbrassgrating attached, and a portion of a broken spar, painted white. Captain Allsop said he thought tlie spar was a portion of the spanker boom of ia sailing ship. On being informed that a life buoy from tlie missing Locli Lomond had been picked up near Great Barrier Island, -Captain ABsop said he was strongly of opinion that tlie wreckage washed -ashore at tho -Oliatha-ms had come from that vessel. There wore no -marks or letters on the wreckage, -but he thought that inquiries mado in Melbourne or Newoastle regarding tlie color of tho Locli Lomond’s spars might give some clue. Captain Allsop -further stated that if the Loch Lomond liad been ib trouble in Cook Strait or oven to the northward of New Zealand, the currents which set to the south would carry floating wreckage in tho direction of the Chat-hams.
