AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS IN LONDON.
At the Australian Artists’ Club dinner the speakers urged that they should not be overlooked when plans were considered for decorating the Commonwealth buildings. It was decided to petition the Commonwealth Government in the matter.
FINE FOR CONTEMPT OF COURT
Mr. Bottoinley was fined £3OO for contempt in publishing an article entitled “John Bull,” commenting on the Guildhall proceedings.
RAILWAY AND DOCK COMPANIES—A SETTLEMENT.
The Taff Vale Railway Company pays the Cardiff Docks Company £4,445,600, the Bute Dock Company receiving £1,900,000 in shares and cash.

AN OIL STEAMER ON FIRE. . - SINGAPORE, Dec. 18. The Bucknall Company’s ship Kaloma,- from America to China, was afire at Singapore, endangering 80,u00 oases of oil and also the shipping. The Kaioma was sunk by the fortress.
MOUNT MORGAN ACCIDENT COMMISSION. BRISBANE, Dec. 18. The commission appointed to inquire into the lato Mount Morgan disaster made a number of recommendations for the safer working of sections of the mine where the accident- occurred.
SUNDERLAND SHIP BUILDING—A DECLINE. (Received Dec. 20, 4.15 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 19.. The Sunderland shipbuilding output declined from 91 vessels with a tonnage of 296,6(35, iu 1907, to 41, with a tonnage of 87,556, in the present year. TTALIAN-AUSTRALIAN STEAMER LINE—PROPOSAL DROPPED. . The “Shipping Gazette” states that the proposed new line of steamers between Italy and Australia will probably bo dropped, shipowners finding the terms which the Government demands as to the conditions of a subsidy too onerous.
A MURDEROUS LUNATIC. (Received Dec. 21, 1 a.in.) SYDNEY, Dec. 20. A patient of Callan Park asylum, named Popple ton, beat an attendant named Bunny to death with a shovel, and then stabbed himself. He is in a critical condition.
