[Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 1. The Auckland* —Canterbury interprovincial, cricket match for the Plain - ket Shield commenced here to-day in beautiful weather before an attendance of 2,000. Tlie wicket was a little slow when play started, but improved as the day wore on. Auckland won the toss and decided to bat, making a first innings total of 239.' The bowling of Bennett and the 'fielding of the Canterbury team were the principal factors in* keeping, the total down. Poverty Bay batted first, totalling 160, Sainsbury, Derccourt, Gibson and Oates batting well. Scindo ' replied" with 210, O’Brien, Hawke and Redgrave playing good cricket.
