DUNEDIN, Dec. 31. The. chess championship was continued to-day, when Davies heat Edwards Alason beat Grierson, Dodds beat Barnes. Rolling beat Fox. Eorsytli had a bye. Dodds’ win against Barnes was a very good one. and has been entered for the brilliancy prize. The unfinished game, Alason v. Kelling, was completed, resulting in a draw. DUNEDIN. Jan. 1. I'he sixth round of the chess championship was played to-day and resulted as follows :—- Cox v. Edwards ((Sicilian Defence). —Up to the 18th move Cox attacked vigorously. Edwards replied with a counter attack and offered a rook for nothing, which was declined. A .lively game followed' and was terminated by Edwards announcing mate in three oti the 26th move.

Barnes, v. Grierson (Sicilian, defence).—Barnes effected a novel variation by P —y B 3 oh the fourth move instead of taking the pawn. Grierson lost a pawn on the 15th move and later a rook, and resigned on the 26th move. Kclling v. Forsyth (Queen's gambit declined). —Forsyth should have won. but being pressed for time, had to move hurriedly, thus giving Kelling an opportunity of rubbing in a succession of checks by which the latter gained knight aiul the game on the 34th move.

Dodds a-. Alison (Hungarian defence). —Dodds, departing early from book lines, initiated a king's side attack. which Alason successfully pirried. Eventually the game resoltv«'d itself into- an ending of rook aml «lx paAAiis on -A1 ison’s side 'versus Dodd’s rook and four paAvns. Dodds resigned on the 46th move. Davies had a bye.

Barnes and Fox, by arrangement, played off the game assigned to the seventh round. Barnes opened Avith Evans’ gambit. Fox lost- a knight on ilie 14tii move and a bishop on the nineteenth and resigned on the 2Stli.
