THE BROKEN HILL STRIKE
DYNAMITING AND RIOTING. CONFLICT WITH THE POLICE. United Press Association, Copyright. (Received Jan. 4, 11.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 4. Sensational developments have occurred at Broken Hill. An attempt was made to dynamite the Silvertown branch line of tramways leading to the mines. Not much damage ivas done.
Seven officials who were given a safe conduct through tlie strikers’ pickets were assaulted by a crowd and much knocked about. A contingent of thirty police arrived on the scene and the crowd stoned them. The police threatened to draw their revolvers. Dr. Harris tried to drive thr
•ough under police escort, but the crowd prevented him. Tom Mann jumped into the buggy and drove it away. The crowd beat the police back. The latter have now retired on the mine.
