A WATERSIDE DIFFICULTY
UNIONISTS AND NON-UNION- - ISTS. [Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 4. Some sixty members of the Waterside Workers’ Union engaged to work cargo on the steamer Victoria, when she arrived early this morning, refused to work unless some non-mem-bers of the Union (seven or eight in number), who had also been engaged, were put off. The men were engaged in the ordinary way on Saturday and the fact that some were nonunionists was not know until tins morning. The men having stated their intention not to work except :m dismissal of the non-umomsts, it was thought advisable, delay in the departure of the steamer being .serious, to give way to them. Ihree or four non-unionists expicsscd willingness to ioin the union and were allowed to work, the rest were dismissed ft was arranged between tne two parties that members o the union should be provided with badges to enable employers to distinguish them from non-unionists but tne badges will not be available lor a week or two vet.
