CONTINUOUS RAIN
The weather yesterday showed no signs of improvement on the preceding days, and towards evening the wind rose considerably, and was accompanied by driving showers of thick rain. Shipping was again greatly interfered with, and neither the s.s. Star of Australia nor the s.s. Pakeha was able to recommence loading their cargoes of frozen meat. The latter vessel is still sheltering under Nick's Head, while the former put out to sea yesterday, and will return when the weather* moderates sufficiently. The captain of the auxiliary schooner Fairburn, which arrived from Opiti'ki yesterday morning, reports very rough weather on the coast; while the U.S.S. Co.’s Squall was sheltering at Tologa Bay all day, and the s.s. AYanaka was detained at Napiers Both these vessels are, however, due to reach port this morning. There was a very heavy sea running in the bay yesterday, which increased somewhat towards evening, when tremendous waves were dashinn «v«r botn-groyne and breakwater. Up till 9 a.m. yesterday 5.27 inches of rain had been registered in Gisborne, the heaviest downfall being for the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. on Sunday, when 1.53 inches were recorded. The outlying districts .also report having falls of rain, with the rivers rising rapidly. FLOODS AT AYAIROA. [Pbess Association.] AY AIR OA, Feb. 15. There is a heavy gale with rain. The AA airoa and AA'aiau rivers are in flood, but no damage is reported.
