CRIMINAL SITTINGS. AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. At the Supreme Court to-day, the trial began of Albert Edward Double. William Smith, and Alexander Walker, in connection with an assault alleged to have been committed on an old woman at tire Auckland Domain. Double was charged with committing a more serious offence than the other two, while they v, ere charged with aiding and abetting him. Up t 0.5.30 p.m. the evidence, which was heard with closed doors, bad not concluded, and the case was adjourned till tomorrow, the jury being locked up for the night. PALMERSTON N., Feb 17.
At tho Supreme Court this morning Mr. Justice Cooper reserved for the Appeal Court the case of Andrew Godbay, in which the jury returned a verdict of common assault, but said there was not sufficient evidence to show who struck the first blow. Accused was let out on bail. Clms. Carter was acquitted on a charge ol sheep-stealing.
