MATAWHERO STOCK SAI.ES
There was a good attendance at the weekly Matawhero sales held yesterday, when heavy yardings of stock were submitted. The general tone of the market was bright, though some slight depression existed in the earlier stages. The majority of the sheep sold found local purchasers, but several 'pens were bought for shipment to the South Island. SHEEP.
About 17,000 sheep -were yarded, the bulk of which were ewes, and competition was fairly brisk, practically every lot being sold under the hammer. The fat .pens were sparsely occupied, and the demand for this class of stock was not keen, butchers being evidently disposed not to operate. In stores the best demand was, as during last week’s sale, for young ewes, and any good-framed, healthy sheep of this class offered found ready purchasers. Fat stock sold as follows: 60 ewes 9s 6d. 2 lambs 7s 6d, 8 ewes 11s 6d, and 50 ewes 9s.

The cattle pens were well filled, about 530 head being offered, mostly all stores. The demand for young stock was fairly keen, and the majority of the yarding was sold under., the hammer. The following a.re some of the prices: 1 fat bullock £4 12s 6d, 2 store heifers £1 as, 6 young steers 17s, 20 bullocks £4 10s, 95 18-month steers £3. . PIGS. Only 35 pigs were penned, but these sold up to ruling rates. The priceswere as under:7 weaners 7s 6d, 4 porkers 17s, 6 porkers 16s, sweaners ss, 4 weaners 4s, 3 porkers 1/s, 3 slips 9s, 3 slips 11s.
