LUNATIC’S ACTION.
UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO COMMIT SUICIDE. [Press Association.] INVE RC AR 0 I LL. Ala rch 9. At the Police Court yesterday Clarence Matthews, a man of "about 22 years, who was arrested at Alangara on Saturday evening, was charged with theft of clothing valued at £3, and with discharging a revolver at a man named AV-ilson, with intent to do bodily harm. Accused was not in a fit mental condition to appear, and was remanded. He had been confined in a cell during the. night, and while there made a. most determined but unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide. The constable in charge of him ’eft him for a few minutes, apparently resting peacefully, but during the constable’s absence accused attempted to hang himself with a piece of his blanket. He tied one end round a grating above the door and the other round his neck. Then he kicked the bucket away, and would 'certainly have died had the constable not returned in time. Matthews has since been declared a lunatic and sent to Scacliff.
