MEMBERSHIP RALLY
A meeting of the members of ilie \ .- Young Aleirs Christian Association J was held las;t evening at St. Andrew’s Schoolroom, Air. F. S. Alalcolm presiding. The meeting was a membership rally in order to commence a campaign for new members. A list of the directors and members was submitted, and there was considerable excitement as the captains, Alessrs H. Elinor and_ J. Dawson, each in turn selected their men. Colors were then drawn for, with the result that Captain Ennor’s team, with Alessrs Colin Perry and H. Adair as lieutenants, L are to be known as the “'Reds,” and the other side, headed by Captain Dawson and Lieutenants D. Alalcolm and J. Peach, are the “Blues.” Short speeches of an inspiring character were made by the chairman, Air. C. It. AYebster (general secretary), and the captains. The members present afterwards were divided into two committees for their respective sides. The proceedings were not divulged, but from the secret- _ nature of the gatherings and the interest taken some startling announcements should be made. A friendly feeling of rivalry already exists between the contest-^— j£. ants, and each man who is won is rZ expected to become a strong partisan for his side. The contest will conclude on 31st Alarch, and on Ist April a gathering of campaigners wn>be held, at which the losing sichiwill partake of a- porridge supper. Itffas been arranged to hoist a flag over the V Association’s new rooms, which will indicate the side which is leading, _ and on 27th inst. the results will be kept secret, the winning side being announced at the final gathering. During the campaign the tally of members will be made at noon each . day. It has also been arranged td"\ exhibit a large thermometer in Alessrs Shierlaw and Co.’s window which will register the number of members gained from day to day. The number aimed at in'the campaign is 222. but it is thought probable that this number will be exceeded.
A discussion took place as to the membership privileges, which include reading room, correspondence room, social gaterings, lectures, literary and debating society, winter games, and oter social features. Arrangements are being made for the purchase of a billiard table, and the necessary steps taken to form a gymnasium.
