After the second lap, it was apparent that the limit men were out of. the running, and that the finish would be fought out by Everiss, Stokes, and the scratch man 'Griffin, who was running strongly and cutting down his men m fine style. In the last lap, at the turn before entering the straight, Griffin came up with the leaders, and made a couple ot attempts to jostle Stokes out of the inside running. Everiss, who was quite fresh at the finish, spurted brilliantly, and breasted the tape three yards ahead of the scratch man, Stokes being close- up third. Griffin entered a protest against Everiss and Stokes after the race on the ground that rhey had jostled him off the/Rraclv. The. com-, mittee called -the three placed men before thorn, and also took tne evidence of independent witnesses, the weight of v/hb'-e evidence went to prove that Griffin had deliberately jostled Stokes twice niid had aloe boon guilty of a breach of the rules which govern " running on attempting to pass on, the inside. After hearing, the; evidence, the committee dismissed the protest, and deemed award second money to Stokes and allow no third money. Ihe president ■and .several speakers- declared that, tho ; gj. Patrick’s .Spoi'ts Ccmulixtee had a
reputation for countenancing...nothing but clean sport, and they meant to uphold that reputation. The finding; or the.committee was received with unqualified' approval. Eventually the-- field narrowed down to. four men, Johnston, Sutton, Gerard, and Durham. The first-named two failed to clear the bar, and a most exciting finish and some excellent jumping.,was witnessed before Durham won the event by clearing oft 3in, amidst hearty cheering. The styles of the two men were.) very dissimilar. Durham, - whoT' is tall and strongly built, takes a long run and takes off a surprisingly long distance from the bar, ■ while Gerard takes a side .run and jumps very. neatly. ...The winner, was facetiously nicknamed “The Kangaroo” by the spectators,; and a veritable wallaby lie proved himself. Three-legged Race.—Pilcher Brothers 1, Pollock Brothers 2. Five entries. The St. Patrick’s Handicap was won by-J. Pollock, with two firsts and a second, thus securing 13 points. A. C.
