WASHINGTON, March 26. After a dinner in honor-of Lady Arthur Paget at Washington Mrs. Pierre Lorillard, junior, wife of a tobacco magnate; committed suicide, by inhaling gas in a bathroom. She was still wearing a- diamond coronet when found dead. COMMONWEALTH CAPITAL SITE. MELBOURNE, March 27. The Federal Government intends to ask the Government of New South Wales for the transfer of a full.thousand square miles of Federal territory. IRRIGATION IN AUSTRALIA. The Water Commission is completing a scheme of irrigation of 6000 square miles in Wimmera district at a cost of £IBO,OOO. A STUDENT OF LABOR LAWS. SYDNEY, March 27. Mr. Weinstock, the special Labor Commissioner appointed by California to study labor laws in the principal countries of the world, for the prevention of strikes, has arrived, and is conducting enquiries. ENGLISH AND AUSTRALIAN TRADE. Mr. Wickes, British Board of Trade representative, met the Chamber of Commerce, and urged the necessity for fostering British interests. His mission to Australia was largely, he said, to promote an exchange of the raw fox tho manufactured article. He was confident of a- big expansion of trade between England arid Australia. A NEW SOUTH WALES FIRE. A fire at White Cliffs destroyed a block of business premises. The inmates were asleep, and several had narrow escapes. VISITING JAPANESE WARSHIPS. (Rqceived March 28, 4.15 p.m.) VICTORIA, 8.G., March 27. Two Japanese warships, formerly the Russian cruisers Bayen and Varyag, will visit Esquimault, A ancouvei, in the middle of May. Arrangements are being made to give them a cordial reception, [Esquimault is a naval station on the south of Vancouver Island.] WOOLPACKS. (Received ■ March 28, 4.30 p.m.) LONDON. March 27. The Committee on Vegetable Fibre in Wool has issued a final report. It recommends the use of specially prepared packs of closely "woven texture with thick corrugated paper lining. BRITISH EMIGRATION TO AUSTRALASIA. The Emigrants’ Information Office reports that during 1908 inquiries respecting Australasia increased 49 percent compared with 1907,v alid nearly doubled Canada’s increase-. The departures for Australia totalled 21,694 and for New Zealand 11,675.
