The present strength of the trades unions in Gisborne is 650 members, an increase of 140 on the previous* year.

A special passenger train will leave Gisborne for Waikohu at 10.15 a.m. today, and is to leave AYaikohu to return at -noon.

The mails which arrived by the s.s. Monowai yesterday will be sorted this morning at 7 a.m., and there will be a counter* delivery between 9 a.in. and 10 a.m.

A special meeting of subscribers to the Mianutuke to Alangapoike and No.'s 70 and 526 telephone lines will be held at Te Puru at 2 p.m. on Mondav next, April 19. '

The revenue received at the Customhouse, Gisborne, last week was: —Customs duties £609 10s 3d, beer duty £43 4s 6d, light dues £l4 9s lOd, shipping fees 14s, other receipts ss; total, £668 3s 7d.

An inset appears in our town edition drawing attention to "the fact that should it be wet to-day the Maskelyne and Devant Mysteries Company will give a matinee performance at 2.30 p.m. in the Theatre.

At the Trades Council meeting on Saturday evening, the question of Sir Joseph Ward’s action in presenting a Dreadnought to the British Government was raised, but consideration of the matter was deferred till the next monthly meeting.

A change, unwelcome to holidaymakers, occurred in the weather yesterday. A little rain fell early in'the morning, but the day was fine. In the evening, however, rain began to fall again, and before midnight there were .several sharp showers. About midnight it commenced to rain heavily, and an almost continuous downpour descended during the early hours of this morning.

The freezing works’ sports will he held at Waerenga-a-liika to-day. A (most attractive programme of pedestrian and cycling events has been arranged, and some good contests should be witnessed. Messrs Clare and Son have been entrusted with the right of supplying refreshments. A special train will leave Gisborne at 10.15 a.m. for the sports ground, returning to town after the last event has been decided.

Constable Kirby, of Tologa Bay, arrived in town last evening in charge of a young man about 26 years of age, who is apparently suffering from religions mania. He has been working on Waipare station for some time, but only lately developed the symptoms which culminated in his arrest. Vixen brought to the police station the young man was most nervous and excitable, and inclined to be violent. He will be subjected to medical examination today.

At a recent meeting of the Trades and Labor Council resolutions were passed urging the extension of the harbor franchise to all consumers on the Parliamentary roll, and also urging an amendment in the constitution of the Gisborne Harbor Board. At the Trades Council meeting on Saturday evening rcolics• wore reeivod fiom Sir Joseph Ward, stating that the matters had been duly noted. The Hon. JCarroll also replied, stating that the matters would, in due course, receive the full consideration they merited.
