THE DOMESTIC HELP.
[To The Editor.] Sir.—Any right-minded person will agree withM. Mannix that the petition >eing circulated by the Mayoress is not entirely for the purpose of relieving those iiv want of domestic help, but for the adipose of increasing the number o<4nis for employers to choose from. *fnd by introducing competition to reduce the price o_r their services. If vmestic servants are getting now an average of 13s per week wages for 13 hours’ work, what will their condition be if a few thousand more domestic servants are brought into the Dominion, and what wages they expect r As M. Mannix points out, it is obvious * "t the petition was drafted bv sommale, and its wording clearly indicates the hand of the Mayor, the same gentleman. was it not, who moved on the Harbor Board that the men should not get the increase of wages they deserved. and suggested that nine hours a dav was a reasonable dav for them to work instead of edght hours?—l am. etC ” -DOMESTIC.” [The petition in question was not drawn up in Gisborne, but in a duplicate of that forwarded from Christchurch. —Ed. G.T.]
