CRITICISED BY THE PRESS

United Press Association —Copyright

LONDON, May 25

Several newspapers consider Mr Lloyd-George’s estimated extra spirit revenue, £1,600,000, as too small. The “Times” asks how a tax will be justified which virtually takes, according to Mr Lloyd-George, from the-consumer, but yields the Exchequer only £160,000.. The Westminster “Gazette” says it would regret an indirect tax which cost the consumer lid to yield the State Bd. Mr Balfour estimates the increase of death duties at the top scale of 75 per centum. TOBACCO AND PETROL DUTIES. ADOPTED BY THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. United Press Association —Copyright (Received May 26, 8.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. The tobacco and petrol duties have been adopted.
